The John Schneider Orchestra performs the best of the Great American Songbook, the pop songs of the 1920s - 1950s, featuring the songs of Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmicheal, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Kern, Berlin, and the Gerswhins.
Playwright, actor, and long time director of Theatre X, John Schneider leads the band, sings and tap dances. The band includes female vocalist and actress Claire Morkin, pianist Connie Grauer and dummer Kim Zick (of the well-known band Mrs. Fun), saxophonist Rip Tenor (aka comedian and columnist Art Kumbalek), and bass player Tom McGirr.
The Orchestra was the house band at the legendary Cafe Melange in the historic Hotel Wisconsin in downtown Milwaukee from 1988 until the club was closed in 1997. The Orchestra has continued to perform throughout the area for clubs, festivals, organizations and events. It has performed for the Pabst Theatre, The Milwaukee Art Museum, The Florentine Opera, The Skylight Cabaret, Summerfest, Bastille Days, Jazz in the Park, the Third Ward Jazz Festival, the Wisconsin State Fair, and the Boerner Botanical Gardens, among many others. It was also a weekly feature of the Wisconsin Public Radio variety hour The Hotel Milwaukee Show.
Its current home base is O’Donohues Irish Pub, 13225 W. Watertown Plank Road in downtown Elm Grove.
